This cabin is just south of the Exxon gas station at the junction of Hwy 120 (Tioga Road through Yosemite) on Hwy 395. I snapped the original photo whizzing by in the car in summer, but painted it in winter snow.  I've lost the photo and now paint from a watercolor I did just before I went to Jackson Hole with my beloved Evelyn. This is the first time I have painted it in oils.

50-50 IV Juliana Avenue (Diptych)

Rough Water at Juliana Avenue (W/C), 6 x 6", created on 6/15/12
SOLD
I painted the same scene a week apart, both in plein air, about the same time of day.  For today's oil, I moved over to the right about ten feet to capture the green and pink bluff and the surf filled with kelp. I live in such an incredibly beautiful place.

Juliana Avenue (Oil), 6 x 6", created on 6/22/12
 SOLD

50-50 IV Bird's Rest (Diptych)

Bird's Rest (W/C), 6 x 6", created on 6/15/12
SOLD
This 50-50 process is fascinating to me. Last Friday, I painted the watercolor out on Juliana Avenue in Moss Beach.  The water was rough and gray. Today, a week later, I painted the oil from the same spot and the water was turquoise and calm.  It's obviously the same scene, but the media, lighting, and surf make both paintings feel very different.
Bird's Rest (Oil), 6 x 6", created on 6/22/12
SOLD

Surfer's Beach (W/C), 6 x 6", created on 6/14/12

I painted both of these from a 12 x 24" oil of Surfer's Beach.

Miramar Beach (Oil), 6 x6", created on 6/20/12

These two are the first of my diptychs. I painted the oil to go with Surfer's Beach (W/C), but they didn't look married. I painted the watercolor above from photos and the oil.

50-50 IV June 20, 2012

Mirada Beach (Oil), 6 x 6", created on 20 June 2012

I painted my first oil for the 50-50 IV show yesterday on the bluff between Surfer's Beach and the Mirada Inn. My friend Catherine joined me and brought me lunch. Thank you, Catherine!  I was trying to paint the companion oil painting to go with the watercolor Sunlight on the Bluff, but when I got home, Eleanor concurred that they were not a fit marriage.

I've designed a nice little set up for painting in plein air.  I've got twenty-five  7 x 7" canvases taped down to  pieces of cardboard and my french easel stocked with the essentials. I'm ready! I'm on schedule and feeling up to the challenge of painting 41 more paintings in the next 41 days.
