Day 59 Brushes Bird

If the New Yorker can put a brushes painting by Jorge Colombo on its cover, then I can put a brushes painting of a bird from the bookstore window on my blog. I was sitting in Harold waiting for Eleanor in Jamba Juice when I painted Brushes Bird (itouch application).

Day 56 Ross's Cove

I took the dogs for a walk up on the bluff by Mavericks today. I had my oils and an old canvas in the back of Harold so I hiked back up the bluff and painted Ross's Cove (oil, 11 x 14") in about an hour and half. Bailey took off but came back just as I was leaving. I think he was on the road eating worms.

Day 53 Ocean Course

After tennis, I stopped Harold at the parking lot and painted Ocean Course (watercolor, 5 x 7"). It wasn't quite sunset; but, hey, artist's prerogative.

Does anyone know what hole this is?

Day 52 Half Moon Bay Fire Pokers

Collection of Silvia Morando

Half Moon Bay Fire Poker (oil on gessoed board, 12 x 16") has been sitting around for about a year begging me to finish it. Clay really liked it so I thought I'd finish it up for him. I started it plein air, and I had to scrub some sand off before I could get started.

Regarding my missed paintings: I got a little tired slopping together a small watercolor at 9:30 p.m. just to make my daily quota. Then, once I missed, it was easy to let another couple of days go. Both Clay and Eleanor (especially Eleanor) implored me to get back with it today. I thank them.

Day 48 Old Hay Derrick

One more try at the Old Hay Derrick (watercolor, 5 x 7"). I used a couple of Zoltan Szabo's techniques: one, putting in the mountain range last; and, two, using backruns to form the trees.

Day 47 White Egret

Clay, Claire, and I took the dogs for a walk out to Mavericks today. The wall from which spectators got washed was about three feet tall and had some hard ole rocks at the bottom.

On the way back, there were a lot of birds along the shore. Clay snapped this picture from which I painted White Egret (watercolor, 7.5 x 11").

Day 46 Misty Mountain

Misty Mountain (watercolor, 7.5 x 11") is a lesson from Zoltan Szabo's book Trees, Mountains, and Rocks. I used just three colors (french ultramarine, burnt sienna, and blue-green) and painted the entire painting with a 3/4 in. flat brush. There is a little bit of salt in the background to add a snow flurry.

Day 45 Pink Flower

Betty wanted to see a redwood forest while she was in California so we took her, Dee, and Fran to see the Purisima Creek redwoods for their last day here. Fran took a picture of this Pink Flower (watercolor and ink, 5 x 7") for me from which to paint.

Day 44 Mavericks

Collection of Jeanette Baker

I painted Mavericks (watercolor, 5 x 7") in Napa today from an image off the computer of the big wave competition.

While Clay, Dee, Fran, and I were hiking with the dogs, we heard at least seven sirens from fire trucks and ambulances. Turns out a couple of rogue waves tossed a bunch of people off the sea wall and knocked over the judging stand (just beyond the sign that says "beware of rogue waves.")

It truly amazes me how many people swarm the neighborhood to try to see this event. From the shore, you cannot see anything! Just a dot on what looks like a little wave because the Maverick wave breaks so far out.

Day 42 Jellies

Today, Clay, Dee, Fran, Betty, Glenn, Darla, and I went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. At the end of the afternoon, we got to see a momma sea otter with her baby playing in the kelp. Betty and I sat outside while I painted this impression of Jellies (watercolor, 7 x 5").

I painted the paper orange, dried it, painted the jellies with Pebeo masking, then painted the water blue with french and antwerp. I rubbed off the Pebeo, and, voila! Jellies.

Another fabulous day.

Day 41 Negative Tide

Today is my fiftieth birthday! My sister Jeanette, her husband Frank, his mom Betty, my brother Glenn, and his wife Darla all arrived yesterday to surprise me.

One thing that Darla wanted to do was go tide pooling, and there was a wonderful negative tide this afternoon. We all went out to the Fitzgerald Marine Sanctuary where I sat with Betty and painted Negative Tide (watercolor, 7 x 5"). The sun beams were shining down through the clouds, the fishing boats were trawling, and the harbor seals were sun bathing.

It has been a perfect day!

Day 38 Triad with Harmony

Triad with Harmony (watercolor, 5 x 7") is another lesson from Eric Wiegardt's book, same picture, four colors this time: brown, blue, yellow, and red. I like yesterday's better with only three colors.

Day 37 Trichromatic 1 & 2

These trichromatic paintings (watercolor, 5 x7") are based on a lessons in Eric Wiegardt's book Watercolor Free and Easy in which he suggests trying different color triads other than just red, yellow, and blue. In Trichromatic 1, above, I used burnt sienna instead of red with my french ultramarine blue and transparent yellow. I love the feel of the sky.

In Trichromatic 2, I used Payne's gray instead of blue with my favorite red (Holbien Brown Madder) and yellow (Bumblebee yellow).

My dear friend Mairi gave me a signed copy of Eric's book in 1997 because she could see, even way back then, the looseness, freedom, and simplicity of my work.

Day 36 Sax Player

I drove the HMBHS Jazz Band to SOTA (School of the Arts) in San Francisco today for a jazz festival. This blonde Sax Player (watercolor and ink, 8 x 5") was from Aragon High and quite good. (Not as good as Sabina though.)
