These two are the first of my diptychs. I painted the oil to go with Surfer's Beach (W/C), but they didn't look married. I painted the watercolor above from photos and the oil.

50-50 IV June 20, 2012

Mirada Beach (Oil), 6 x 6", created on 20 June 2012

I painted my first oil for the 50-50 IV show yesterday on the bluff between Surfer's Beach and the Mirada Inn. My friend Catherine joined me and brought me lunch. Thank you, Catherine!  I was trying to paint the companion oil painting to go with the watercolor Sunlight on the Bluff, but when I got home, Eleanor concurred that they were not a fit marriage.

I've designed a nice little set up for painting in plein air.  I've got twenty-five  7 x 7" canvases taped down to  pieces of cardboard and my french easel stocked with the essentials. I'm ready! I'm on schedule and feeling up to the challenge of painting 41 more paintings in the next 41 days.

Jeanne Carbonetti's workshop was held May 21-25, 2012 at the Omega Center for Holistic Studies in in Rhinebeck, New York in the famed Hudson River Valley. The paintings above are my body of work for the five days. Jeanne was inspirational and an excellent teacher. I immersed myself in meditation and painting from within, using no reference photos,  painting what was in my heart and mind, allowing the painting to tell me the next steps, a style Jeanne calls Expressive Realism.

Golden Mist is my favorite from the series, an interpretation of Surfer's Beach. Jeanne gave me the  ultimate compliment during critique, calling it "high noon of Expressive Realism".

I spent the week with my dear friend Kristen, who painted beautifully in cool green, blue, and lavender.

50-50 Entry Sample Diptychs

Surfer's Beach, watercolor and oil
OIL AND W/C SOLD

Poppy Field, watercolor and oil

McNee Ranch, watercolor and oil

Theme (10 words or less): California landscape in watercolor reexamined in oil.

I gained special permission to submit diptychs for the Sanchez 50-50 show, a juried show in which selected artists paint fifty 6 x 6" paintings in fifty days. Clay spend a good part of a day making the diptych JPEGs for me. (Dipsticks, he called them.)

I'm very excited about how these look side by side. The "dipsticks" show the difference in the two media: the vibrancy, the washes, the feel. The pigments are extremely close because when I went back to oils, after fifteen years of studying pigments with Evelyn, I researched the oils and choose those oils with the exact same pigments as my favorite watercolors. Finally, I feel that I have come into my own as an artist with these two media. I painted oils for four years in high school and then watercolors for fifteen years with Evelyn. I feel complete, now, working in both media.

Painting 129 Poppy Field in Oil

Poppy Field, oil, 9 x 12"

I painted this in plein air and wanted the pea rows in the foreground. It ended up being so loose. After I got it home, I wasn't sure that I liked it, but it grew on me as it dried.
